My wife and I just visited Asheville for an anniversary getaway. While visiting we went to the Biltmore Estate and frequented the local breweries in the South Slope district of Asheville. All of the breweries are dog friendly that we went to and we scored an awesome apartment on VRBO within walking distance of them all.
We started out at Green Man brewing, which is deemed one of the oldest in NC. This place has 3 levels and you can watch the beer brewing process from an observation deck while drinking. The selection was pretty good too. They specialize in ales, and even had a sour for my wife. They also serve food, but we stuck with a liquid meal for the time being. They have a good selection of items to purchase so you don’t forget about the visit. We rated this one a 10! If you visit Asheville you have to stop here.
Burial Beer Co. was the next stop and it didn’t disappoint either. A great selection of beers to choose from. They have a really nice outdoor area with small umbrellas. The dogs loved this area. They also have a small shop where you can purchase souvenirs. The building has an old feel and is decorated nicely. This place rated 8.5 for me.
We ate dinner and drank beer at Wicked Weed the first night. I will say the beer was awesome and the food was very good for a brewery. So good that we ate there 2 nights in a row. My wife was able to get a flight of sours, and I did the flight of German type beers. We got the dogs a hamburger patty which they scarfed down. The staff was so friendly and accommodating to our dogs. I had the wings and a garden salad. She ate the club sandwich. This brewery gets a 10 as well.
Our second day started with breakfast at Biscuit Head. It is a small place but OMG the portion size is crazy! Our biscuits where opened and layered with fried chicken, pimiento cheese, and their gravy sauce. It was amazing. We ordered a side of biscuit french toast as well. Definitely good but will stick to one meal next time. We had enough food for 4 people.
I took my wife to the Biltmore for her first experience. She was in awe of the size of the property. We walked the grounds and looked at the beautiful plants and flowers starting to bloom. She wanted to stay inside the conservatory. It was like a tropical jungle. We did eat lunch at the old stable restaurant. Their food was amazing too.
We ventured off to Funkatorium (my wife’s favorite) . The building is deceiving from the road. I approached thinking it was a small dive. Boy was I wrong. It was the coolest interior of all the breweries we visited. Tall ceilings and multiple places to drink beer. They also have a really large outdoor area with tables and an outdoor bar. They have a small room with items for purchase. 9.0
Asheville brewing was a small place. Very cool artwork on the exterior. A great selection of beers and items for purchase. They had a private party starting so we didn’t stay too long. I would rate this place a solid 8.
We stopped in at Catawba Brewing but they didn’t have anything my wife wanted so we left. They did have live entertainment.
Twin Leaf Brewing is a great stop. They had a great selection of beers and they offered a small outside area as well. We ended up playing a giant sized version of connect four. The inside of the building reminded me of an old warehouse. You can tell this building leans towards the industrial side. The bartender was very polite and was knowledgeable when asked questions about beers on tap.
I really liked the atmosphere here. I give it a 9.0
The last brewery was White Labs. The building is nice but way too small. If they only served beer it would be fine. We felt they were more focused on serving pizza than beer. We waited in line for about 15 minutes to order one beer. No sours available for my wife so she watched me drink one. Had to score this the lowest with a 7.
We will definitely be visiting Asheville again in the future. Our dogs loved the getaway too. There is plenty to do while there so go ahead and schedule your visit. I hope this short information blog has answered any questions you may have.
